Often, the challenge can be selecting an effective and time-sensitive program to use.<br />

A large study (N=373) was recently published in a peer-reviewed journal demonstrating the efficacy of the Self-Regulation Training System (SRTS). The study utilized a control group and and experimental group design over time. The results indicated statistically significant increases in self-regulation skills utilizing both a teacher report and a student self-report measure.<br />

Research indicates that self-regulation skills predict academic success, healthy social relationships, wellness, happiness, the absence of mental health issues, and college success. Those who regulate well are generally more pro-active in their approach to life, while those who regulate poorly are generally more reactive. </div>

Research continues to show that self-regulation skills are critical for success in many areas. Self-regulation is the set of skills we use to help control and direct our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. The job of a thermostat is a great analogy for self-regulation. It constantly monitors the temperature in the room, and when something changes, it initiates an action that will bring the temperature back into balance. <br />
<br />
Children with well-developed self-regulation skills:<br />
<ul>
<li>Have fewer behavior problems (Blair & Diamond, 2008)</li>
<li>Have higher reading and math achievement in Kindergarten (Blair & Razza, 2007)</li>
<li>Are able to manage their feelings and behaviors better (Blair & Diamond, 2008)</li>
<li>Are more socially-emotionally competent</li>
</ul>
In contrast, poor self-regulation has been linked to:<br />
<ul>
<li>High rates of expulsion in preschool classrooms (Gilliam & Shahar, 2006)</li>
<li>Lower reading and math achievement in Kindergarten (Blair & Razza, 2007)</li>
<li>Aggressive and oppositional behavior (Graziano et al., 2006; Raver, 2004)</li>
</ul>
<strong>What Can We Do?</strong><br />
As with most skills, early exposure and training is best. The <a href="http://www.selfregulationtraining.com/" target="_blank">Self-Regulation Training System</a> offers a simple, concrete method for teaching children the skills necessary for improving self-regulation. <br />
<br />
We begin with simple lessons to help young children learn how to regulate their physical responses to changes changes in the environment. We teach them how to recognize their Warning Signs and then how to regulate them.<br />
<br />
We then move to helping them learn how to regulate their emotions by labeling, expressing and owning their feelings. With preschool-age children, we do not get very far into cognitive regulation skills. However, we do find tools like the <a href="http://www.selfregulationstation.com/sr-training-board/" target="_blank">Self-Regulation Training Board</a> to be very helpful.<br />
<br />
Results of the Self-Regulation Training System have been shown to significantly increase self-regulation skills. <strong>Recently, 380 First Grade children received 6 hours of Self-Regulation training over a 6-week period of time. The average score on the Self-Regulation Teacher Rating Scale improved from 72 to 87.</strong> This extremely significant outcome is very exciting and underscores the notion that young children are capable of learning self-regulation skills to increase success and school readiness.<br />

The Self-regulation Training Program, outlined in the new book <em>Helping Young People Learn Self-regulation</em>, is gaining a great deal of support from mental health professionals, school administrators, teachers and parents. <br />
<br />
The program was implemented in two 4th grade classrooms, two 1st grade classrooms and two Kindergarten classrooms. The results were exceptional. There were significant improvements as reported by the student questionnaires and the teacher rating scales. There was also an 83% reduction in Office Discipline Referrals. Additionally, the comments from the teachers regarding the impact of the program on their own teaching style and interactions with students was extremely encouraging. <br />
This program is currently being adopted by schools districts as a common core set of skills that can be easily taught in the classroom and can have an impact on several behavioral and academic issues. Schools and mental health agencies can use this one framework to address many different areas including academic performance, behavior problems, social/emotional and mental health issues.<br />

I often wonder if those critics had children of their own, because<br />
if they did, they would realize that children are forming "beliefs"<br />
about their world from the time they are able to experience their<br />
environment. <br />
<br />
I do agree that we should not use the same types of strategies,<br />
or advanced vocabulary, with children as we do with adults. However, <br />
there are engaging tools that can help children learn to identify and challenge<br />
unhealthy thoughts to improve their mood and behavior.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.cpschallenge.com/" target="_blank">Challenge Software Program</a> utilizes short video clips that begin<br />
with an "Activating Event." We then freeze the action to present<br />
Healthy and Unhealthy thoughts that the main character might have about<br />
the event. Next, we have the competing thoughts challenge each<br />
other to resolve the cognitive dissonance. This takes place in <br />
a short video game format where the child tries to "defeat" the <br />
unhealthy thoughts. The ending to the video clip and the fate<br />
of our main character depend on which thought wins. <br />
<br />
Engaging cognitive therapy tools, like the <a href="http://www.cpschallenge.com/" target="_blank">Challenge Software Program</a>,<br />
can help children begin to understand that they have control over their<br />
own moods and behaviors. They will begin to identify unhealthy<br />
thought patterns and learn how to effective challenge those beliefs.<br />

Hopefully you will have some extra time to spend with your children this holiday season. Here are a few simple things you can do to improve your child's self-regulation:<br />

<ul><li>Take a little extra time to spend one-on-one with your children. It's easier to <strong>hear</strong> what they have to say and to communicate what you would like for them to <strong>hear </strong>from you when there are just two of you.</li>
<li>Tell stories of your family traditions and how they came to be. Family traditions provide a child with a strong sense of identity and connectedness that serve as the foundation for healthy self-control.</li>
<li>Communicate the need to be thankful for what they have, and the importance of helping others. The holiday season provides opportunities to give back to those who may be less fortunate.</li>
<li>Try and remember to "guide" children to come to a healthy conclusion when they struggle with social/emotional issues. We are often too busy, or have a strong desire to "fix" things quickly. Helping children learn to problem-solve on their own is a skill that will help them to be more successful no matter what challenges they may face. </li>
</ul>Taking a few minutes to help your children learn self-regulation is a gift that will continue to produce rewards in all areas of their lives. Those who regulate well are more successful:<br />

<li>in school with better grades</li>
<li>in self-care and physical health</li>

Resources that involve videos and interactive games engage children on "their turf." They feel less threatened because the technology is familiar to them. Their defenses are often lower when watching, or interacting, with characters in a computer program because it's less direct. They are able to relate to the situations and characters, but it's much less intimidating than a direct line of questioning. <br />
<br />
We have been noting the benefits of computer-assisted counseling techniques for several years while developing the <a href="http://www.cpschallenge.com/">Challenge Software Program</a> for children (a program that uses video scenarios and games to teach children the basics of self-regulation). From our experience, there is really no comparison between the engagement of children when it comes to computer-assisted counseling techniques and traditional interventions. In social situations, being able to appropriately regulate ones response can have a significant impact on making and keeping friends.</p><p>When addressing Self-regulation issues, it can be helpful to simplify the behaviors down into two main categories:<br /></p><ol><li>Over-responding: An extreme outward response to an event that most individuals would see as ordinary (e.g. - Screaming when a door opens)</li><br /><br /><li>Under-responding: Little or no response to something that most individuals would have an external response to (e.g. - Eye contact, social greetings or pain)<br /></li></ol><p>When assisting children with special needs, we spend a great deal of time working on eliminating "extreme" responses to neutral stimuli (e.g. - sounds, clothing or transitions). </p><p>Many people draw upon Behavioral interventions (eliminating triggers, applying consequences, modeling, etc.) to reduce these extreme responses. </p><p>However, it's also important to address the Emotional and Cognitive aspects of Self-regulation to increase the chances of success. This can include:<br /></p><ul><li>Teaching the child how to implement his/her own appropriate calming techniques</li><br /><br /><li>Breaking interactions down as they happen to process responses together</li><br /><br /><li>Utilizing stories, games, and videos to teach appropriate emotional expression<br /></li></ul><p>Our goal as parents is for our children to be able to regulate themselves effectively. This process happens over time and on a continuum. Our framework for working with children needs to be soundly based on outcomes and research. In addition to these pressures, are the ever-increasing demands to do More in Less time and with Less resources. </div><div></div><br /><br /><div>I believe that is why so many of us have migrated toward the use of Cognitive-behavioral psychology. I also believe that these pressures have forced us to address "global" themes of behaviors (like self-regulation) that can affect many areas of functioning to maximize the effectiveness of our interventions.<br /></div><div></div><br /><br /><div>The model in the picture above is soundly based on Cognitive-behavioral psychology and encourages addressing Self-regulation to maximize results in several areas. This is leading many schools to select programs or philosophies that are based soundly on the principles of Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).<br /><br /><br />Now, after decades of research and over 450 randomized studies showing positive results, it seems as No surprise that CBT is the philosophy of choice to get results.<br /><br /><br />Other factors that seem to influencing this choice include:<br /><ul><li>Ease of Application - the ideas are simple and easy to understand</li><br /><li>Face Validity - the interventions make sense to teachers, parents, and children</li><br /><li>Psycho-educational Emphasis - CBT is a very open model that involves a "teaching" approach<br /></li></ul><p>As a clinician, it is quite refreshing to see this shift, and the incorporation of the Cognitive aspect of interacting with children, in addition to the Behavioral. The Cognitive portion of CBT focuses more on the development of Healthy thought patterns that will result in healthy behaviors. </p><br />As I travel around and meet with School professionals, the interest appears to be very High. Improving Self-regulation is one of the most basic, but also one of the most important abilities we can help our children develop.</div><div><br /> </div><div>Self-regulation is related to academic achievement, social skills, happiness, mental health issues, and self-esteem.<br /></div><div> </div><div>Sometimes it's easier to break Self-regulation down into 3 categories: </div><ul><li>Physical - The ability to calm our body down when our Fight/Flight response is activated</li><br /><li>Emotional - The ability to have our emotional response match the situation</li><br /><li>Cognitive - The ability to plan and problem-solve</li></ul><p>This is a good list to use when evaluating whether or not to try a new intervention or activity with your child. Ask yourself if it fits into one of these three categories. </p><div>Physical strategies usually have to do with teaching calming techniques. The Emotional strategies are geared toward appropriate labeling and expression of feelings. And the Cognitive aspect will involve things like making lists, problem-solving strategies, or engaging in higher order thinking. </div><div></div><br /><div>There are many activities out there to choose from, but it really helps to have a "framework" to know what you are working on, and what you are looking for. The problem with these types of thoughts is that when we start down that line of thinking, we are giving control over our Mood to someone, or something outside of ourselves. The irony here is that we are typically giving to someone, or something, that we are very upset with. Think about that for a moment:) </div><div></div><div>In order to change our Mood, we must first understand that we have control over our Mood. Our thoughts and perceptions significantly impact our Mood. We have control over our thoughts and perceptions. They are ours.</div><div></div><br /><div>I sometimes use the analogy of a Remote Control. I discourage people from giving the Remote that controls their Mood to someone, or something they are upset with. Take the Remote back and change the channel yourself. </div><div><br /></div><div>This principle also applies to helping others. We are only able to <strong>help</strong> others change their Mood as much as they are willing to change it themselves.<br /></div><div>Our goal is to try and have our Mood Match the Event with regard to intensity and duration. We are wanting children to learn from their behaviors. Usually when learning is the goal, we want to offer some teaching. We can use several different approaches to teach children, and sometimes several different methods are necessary.<br /></div><div>Think about Balancing your Approach.</div><br /><div></div><div>Many parents and professionals teach children by applying consequences. This is similar to the way our judicial system works (search Behaviorism for more info). If applied consistently and correctly, this method can be effective for teaching children what happens when we don't follow the rules. But, is this all we want them to learn? </div><div></div><br /><div>No. We also want them to learn Self-control. If they are simply making good choices because they are afraid of the consequences, that is not going to be effective in the long term.</div><div></div><br /><div>For a balanced approach, to instill long-lasting change, one must consider adding other elements as well. What we refer to as Cognitive psychology, offers many ideas for teaching children how to improve Self-control. Cognitive psychology includes teaching empathy, mindfulness, self-awareness, and recognizing the relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
